Trapline

(Chapan Snares Rabbits)

Scroll

Chapan is a Cree word that means your great grandparents and also means your descendants. My chapan, Julienne Courtoreille Twin, had a trapline of rabbit snares to provide food for her family and she created and sold moccasins trimmed with the rabbit fur for extra money. My kokum, Della Sound, also had a rabbit trapline in Kinuso until they had to move to Edmonton. Trapline is a series of rabbit fur drums to honour their work as providers. I am inspired by the many Indigenous women who continue to adapt, create and remain the backbone of our families and communities.

I acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.
